This series was inspired by the mesmeric quality of wave-forms. Each painting is like a window looking out to the sea where the viewer can channel their mind. Gestural line, grids and broad planes of color emerge and dissolve echoing the ever-changing nature of the sea. By layering seemingly disparate elements the paintings suggest that the deeper mysteries lay submerged beneath the oceans surface, where the underlying forces and patterns aren’t immediately apparent.
Not surprisingly, the color blue figures prominently in this series. Blue's common association with water is one reason. Another more personal reason is that blue, more than any other color, evokes in me a sense of peace and contemplation.
Waves Forms: Works on Paper
This series was executed using Sennelier oil pastel on on Arches oil paper. Each sheet has been specially prepared with a gray/green foundation. Using linear marks that loop back and forth, the artist attempts to focus the mind and draw the viewer into the hypnotic and healing quality of ocean waves. The finished drawings are framed and presented vertically, re-creating the sensation of looking out of a window onto the sea.
